week 9: undyne will never leave sans alone, ever
[there is a dumb skeleton in his dumb gross room. this dumb skeleton is using his early morning hours pre-breakfast spaghetti (why) to be a Huge Nerd in his room.
he's sitting on the floor, writing a bunch of shit, muttering to himself and just not being interesting in any way whatsoever. what could possibly happen!!!]

got ??s thought u mite hve answrs
undying WTF
[She'd thought Satan had just been mocking her or gotten her name wrong the first time she heard it, but now she's not so sure.]
no subject
...ok, ok. which one do you want first: how you did it, or how she knew about it? the latter's way longer.
no subject
BOTH
[The paper actually rips a little under the pencil from how furiously she's pressing it down, and she has to stop to take a few deep breaths so she doesn't waste all the energy she has on this.]
answr 1st ? 1st
no subject
alright. this is way more alphys's thing than mine, so bear with me here. you know how human souls persist after death, but monsters don't? that's because of something called "DETERMINATION". the idea is monsters don't have that... i'm guessing because we have magic? or are magic. again. really not my field.
[he's waving off the details physically before moving on to the more important part:]
i dunno how you did it, but you tapped into that determination to bring yourself back to life. and also give yourself that whole power boost. the downside is... that's not sustainable. monsters's bodies aren't meant to handle determination. even if you'd won against wrath, even if you hadn't gotten hit again, you'd probably have died. ...again.
[whomp there it is]
no subject
She's actually not that shocked at this revelation; she'd figured out most of the basics herself what with the whole 'every single molecule of her body feels like it's flying apart' thing, but she wanted confirmation and an actual explanation behind the mechanics first. It's still disappointing to hear though.
Also note to self, ask Alphys about this when she gets back while playing up how totally cool and sexy she looked (and downplaying the whole dead part).]
can I activ8 it w/o dying 1st? or use it halfway?
[No surprise, she's already planning on how to kick ass the next time she meets with one of the sinparents in battle.]
no subject
no.
[not that sans knows for sure but it's literally a human ability triggered by DEATH it should GO WITHOUT SAYING]
no subject
[UGH LOOK she has been saddled with an awesome power that she can't fucking use unless she dies, of course she's going to immediately try to figure out how to take advantage of it!!]
no subject
well, i don't know ghost rules. have you tried dying as a ghost?
[this has not been tested or approved by any ghost whatsoever]
no subject
should I
[LOOK SHE'LL FUCKING DO IT she's training with Vegeta and that'll probably take her as close to death as possible anywy]
no subject
nope. nuh-huh. i get the feeling if you die now it'll just be permanent.
no subject
[Undyne is so mad that she actually furiously scrawls all of that out, then has to take a break so she can regain her ghost energy and not blow it all out of rage.]
no subject
[sans is, as usual, unhelpful.]
so. you ready for the other part, or do you need a minute.
no subject
She is definitely feeling tired after all that, but she manages to pick up the pencil anyway so she can write out two letters.]
go
[Hopefully, Sans' explanation will be so tl;dr that she can get her strength back while listening to him.]
no subject
ok, so. you know how i told you i was a time cop? this is relevant to that. well. i'm not a time cop, that was bullshit. i just study it. anyway, think of time as a line.
[he helpfully draws a line. on a piece of paper.]
we usually call that a timeline for short. [yes, he is making an excuse to pun at a time like this.] a timeline is just stuff that happens in time overall based on people's actions. there's more than one timeline, an' the stuff that differs from it can be really big or really small.
[he draws some branching paths on the initial line, but they all stay parallel of each other]
time just goes on no matter what. that's normal. anyway. in one of those branches, it's likely that you went undying. since wrath talked about time and diverging branches, so i'm pretty sure she knows about timelines.
[he could stop there. the existence of varying timelines is enough for what undyne asked. he stares at the paper he drew the lines on.]
but there's probably a reason she knows your differing path more than anyone else's here. recently, in the underground, time's been... different. i don't remember when it started, but there's been an anomaly in the-- uh, in time and space. [he's trying to keep it simple for his current audience.] timelines jumping left and right, stopping and starting... it's been a mess. time just resets. i dunno what first caused it.
[and that's not even a lie, since the human's first appearance doesn't coincide with how far back sans remembers the resets happening. there's no way they spent that long in the ruins.]
the point is-- with our time just going back and forth like that, it's likely you've gone undying even in a recent time, and you just don't... remember it. no one remembers resets. some people get a sort of deja vu, and i can usually tell when it happens, but.
[but that's getting way too close to sans admitting resets made him give up which undyne probably won't appreciate, so he just shrugs.]
long story short, there's a good chance you've done that whole shtick before because time in the underground is messed up. the end.
no subject
But if everything he's saying is true, that means...well honestly, she doesn't know what it means. It's a ton of information that's just been dumped on her all at once, she needs time to absorb it first before she can decide on how she's going to react to it.
There's a long wait before the pencil starts moving again - partly because she needs to regain her strength, but mostly because she honestly doesn't even know where to begin with this.]
how do you know
[The pencil stops for a moment, then starts writing again.]
how many times have
[Another long pause.]
how long have you been dealing with this on your own?
[Because she just assumes that's the case. She's never really seen Sans interact much with anyone except Papyrus and occasionally Alphys and...the ex-queen, apparently...and while she doesn't know anything about Toriel, she really can't imagine the first two keeping something this big under wraps and lying to her about it this whole time.]
no subject
[alright, he knows she won't accept that, so. he'll concentrate on trying to answer at least the last one.]
skeleton's honor, i have no idea how long it's been. time's been messed with so much it was hard to keep track, an' after a while i... didn't see the point in bothering to try.
[and it's easy enough to infer from there that he didn't see the point in bothering to try with a lot of things, so he's not going to spell that out.]
no subject
Then she picks up the pencil again.]
tell me
nxtEVERY timeany idea on how 2 stop?
no subject
...sure. i'll make note of it. [he's not gonna mention that he is pretty sure any other sanses would see that and go "was he high?? lmao nah" because. what undyne doesn't know, etc. speaking of shit undyne doesn't know, though:] there wasn't anything i could do. it's... kind of up to the anomaly to stop what they're doing.
[god, he doesn't want to throw the kid under the bus there. despite everything, he likes the human. (this time?) (this time is all that matters, shut up.) well, talking of the anomaly like A Person is all undyne's getting for now. maybe she won't notice!!!]
anyway, we should probably concentrate on getting out of here before thinking of stuff back home.
no subject
But okay, Undyne might be a shounen moron who never thinks before she acts, but she's not actually oblivious. She'd thought the 'anomaly' had just been some weird scientific term for more sciencey shit, but the way Sans is talking about it...]
who is ano
[The pencil stops for a long moment before the next words appear, slowly and carefully as if the writer is concentrating extremely hard on not ripping straight through the paper and shattering the pencil on the floor.]
your revenge motive
[SORRY BUT OH HELL NO ARE THEY NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS FIRST]
no subject
...yeah. the human can reset. guess that's why they offered me revenge? it's stupid, though. kid like that, i figure all they need is... some good laughs, a few good friends. stuff like that. they're not bad.
...anyway, i'm pretty sure they weren't the first to get that power. time's been wonky way longer than a human could've been in the underground.
no subject
But there's something he mentioned before that's bothering her a hell of a lot now. The next words come out choppy, though whether it's because she's getting tired or she's just too angry to write in complete sentences anymore is impossible to tell.]
you said
undying
recent
no subject
anyway, you really think you'd go that far over them? c'mon. kid spends their time petting dogs and flirting with moldsmal. not their fault everyone in the underground is trying to kill 'em.
[sans has no idea if that's true, but he made a promise to an old lady to protect the kid and if it includes a couple of white lies on whether sans is 100% sure the kid is All Good, then. hey. whatever. he's rooting for that kid anyway at this point.]
no subject
i guess
Break knows abt time shit? try him if u want
[She's heard him and Gilbert talk about time shenanigans happening pretty often back in their world at least. She gets the feeling that Sans won't be sharing this with anyone else, but it's not like she has any idea what kind of advice she can offer him, so she can at least point him towards him to someone who might.]
no subject
what, you think he could do more about things with time powers messing about than i could? wow. harsh.
[sans barely even told her because she's DEAD has she learned nothing about him in the entire time she's known him.]
no subject
not our world
could have new ideas
& u never have to see him again
stop carrying evrythng alone
does pap kno
[Goddammit Sans, you are making her so Tired but she is going to babysit you no matter what.]
no subject
[of course sans only latches onto the part with papyrus, why would he ever acknowledge anything else??? anyway he's not going into how time shenanigan rules might differ in something like another fucking universe or wherever the fuck everyone is from. he barely wants to consider it himself. it sounds like so much effort.]
he doesn't need that.
no subject
good
[She still isn't done with this topic or with her new goal of Getting Sans To Make Some Friends Or At Least Have A Meaningful Conversation With Someone Who Isn't His Brother, but she's not sure how much energy she has left so she'll move on for now. She can always bug him about it later.]
so any ideas on town & game shit
no subject
i was kinda countin' on you for that. what with. magic ghost knowledge or whatever. i got a couple of ideas, but nothing concrete. like... the game's been all mental? ugh, that sounds off. gimme a sec.
[he gets up to rummage through his drawers for a very specific pile of papers. he brings it back-- to undyne it's all written in gibberish wingdings, but he's going to be translating on paper next to it. the first thing he's writing down is the list of different incentives/motives.]
when i say mental, i mean it's all been mindgames so far. whether them trying to mess with people's feelings literally or just the general kinda emotional manipulation you'd expect out of a game like this. that first one worried me at first... [he taps "time perception" on the paper] 'till i realized they weren't really messin' with time, just our perception of it. it's mental. it's not real. i dunno if anything they've shown or promised was. ...except maybe the hostages.
[that one he adds because. undyne did die for prussie, for some godforsaken reason. unless something like her ghost is confirmed he's still skeptical!!!]
i think most of the people left are also calling bull on the powers that be, so that's not exactly big news, but my point is... they're really trying to make us kill each other. except in two cases, they haven't done anything physical to any of us-- and those seemed to be against "the rules". what i think is that the game isn't us playing against them, it's them playing against each other or... something else. for... something.
[he's writing down a bunch of question marks alongside this now. thanks sans. completely helpful. you're great.]
miata doesn't say anything about the "sins" from what i've seen, so that's kind of a dead end.
[he pauses there as if thinking it over before shrugging]
going into wild hypothesis time, my last idea's that this town? might not be real. it probably was, at some point, but something obviously happened here. the "abyss" is just the magic letting it happen. the murders committed are bringing it back, with some ghosts along for the ride. so probably murdering gives... something to the town?
[at this point his paper is full of USELESS SCRIBBLES as he spoke his thoughts aloud. wow sans way to write wingdings to translate more wingdings. super useful. everyone is grateful you're here. he looks annoyed for .2 and just crosses it out]
tl;dr nothing i come up with is useful in any way to ending this, shocking exactly no one ever.
[it's his usual self-deprecating tone, because at this point sans's failures are a joke to himself. a hilarious inside joke where nothing he does matters!!! ha ha ha ha!!! SO FUNNY]
no subject
wow
[AND THAT'S ALL HE GETS FOR A WHILE BECAUSE yeah what else is there to say. Oh wait, there's actually some more, but she needs a moment to gather her thoughts and figure out the most concise way to put things.]
prussia is real. also ghost, we met. seems p cool.
[SO YEAH...sorry to just trash that hypothesis right out of the gate.]
met other ghost. marisa kirasame, says she was 1st they killed.
evrythng else makes sense. NOTpride told us to do better & not die when veg died. town from this side also looks way diff.
no subject
[he's a scientist he spends most of his days trashing his own hypothesis, it's cool. he's writing down the name though.]
wonder if anyone's heard that name here from some of the town's ghosts.
no subject
[The pencil wobbles in midair, then drops to the floor. It lifts itself feebly a few inches once or twice before suddenly rolling rapidly into a corner of the room, as if someone might have just kicked it out of frustration.
Looks like her time's up for now.]
no subject
wow. that pencil didn't stand... a ghost of a chance.
[he regrets nothing, ever. still he gets what that probably means, so:]
later, ghostdyne.
